Projects

Alongside the Rahela Trust scholarship programme we focus on three other areas.

You can explore these below.

1 / Community Building & Awareness Raising

We believe supporting women's education does not stop at teaching. Building relationships with the Afghan diaspora, networking with different individuals, groups and organisations, and mobilising volunteers from the diaspora and ally community are also vital.

Given our extensive and deep networks in the country and with European diaspora communities, this is integral.

We do this by:

  1. Hosting an Annual Lecture in January / February

  2. Rahela Trust's Annual Afghan Diaspora Academic Conference

  3. Supporting our supporter's fundraising initiatives

  4. Partnering with inspiring young people across UK universities including the Afghan Society at the University of Cambridge

  5. £1 a month campaign

2 / Advocating Rahela Trust's Development Model

Rahela Trust's unique scholarship model has proven to be a sustainable method for developing fragile states and furthering women's rights.

We illustrate the effectiveness of our programme and champion Rahela Trust's activity when attending conferences and events.

Our Director Rahela Sidiqi is a regular panellist and participant. Some events we have recently been a part of include:

  1. Panelist at the Danish Refugee Council Afghan Diaspora Conference

  2. Spokesperson at the Afghan Women Coalition for Change (AWCC) Conference

  3. Panelist at EU Parliament's Public Sessions of Equality Committee

  4. Speaker at McGill University, Canada: Women & Girls Speak Out: Prioritising Education in Humanitarian Aid in Afghanistan

Read more about the Afghan Women Coalition for Change Conference here

AWCC is a group of female Afghan leaders fighting for positive change in Afghanistan. The conference took place in July 2022.

Key Takeaways included:

- The AWCC should be formally recognized and given the same platform as the de-facto government

- International governments should give the same platforms to real women's groups and civil society leaders as they do the Taliban

- The women from Afghanistan have never been more united

- Afghan female resilience should be celebrated

- The Taliban need to be held accountable

3 / Global Professional Networks

We are keen to establish and grow a network of professionals from across the globe who are willing to give their time to advise and/or mentor Rahela Trust's current and graduated scholars.

This would involve pairing graduates with professionals in their chosen field and facilitating conversations. Professionals would be asked to give advice, share information and help with cover letters and CVs where appropriate.
